Inventors and Inventions

This blog is being used in the educational course EDM 510.

ARider
This week we have been studying famous inventors and their inventions.  You have researched an inventor of your choice and created an inventor/invention foldable.  Now comes the fun part!  In this blog, you will provide information about your inventor (who is this person) and his or her invention (what is so great about the invention).  Do not forget to cite your sources of information.  When you are finished providing information about your inventor and their invention, answer the following question: If you could invent something, what would it be and why?  I am looking forward to reading all of your posts!

  1. The inventor I chose to write about is Garrett Morgan. Garret Morgan invented hair straightening products for African Americans, a breathing device, a revamped sewing machine and an improved traffic signal. All of these inventions have helped to make our lives better.

If I could invent something it would be an automatic vacuum cleaner and mop. They could clean the floor and carpet without me having to get off the couch.

    1. You chose a great inventor to research Ms. Taylor! Mr. Morgan invented and improved several devices/machines that we use today. Where would we be without the traffic signal? Let me know when you invent the automatic vacuum cleaner and mop. I will definitely buy that!

  2. My inventor I think is a person I owe a lot of thanks too! Ruth Wakefield was the inventor of chocolate chips and the chocolate cookie. She was making cookies for guests at her lodge the Toll House Inn. She was planning on making chocolate cookies, but didn't have bakers chocolate. Ruth instead just took a chocolate bar and broke it up and put it in the batter. She thought they chocolate bits would melt into the cookie, but that didn't happen and the chocolate chip cookie was born! I think everyone loves to indulge in a chocolate chip cookie everyone once in a while so we can thank Ruth for this tasty treat we al love!

If I could invent something it would be a device that would help unload things from my car. Whether it is grocery or bags from a long trip I do not like emptying my car!

    1. Ms. Ramon

I believe we all owe a huge thanks to Ruth Wakefield! Where would we be without the chocolate chip cookie? As you, I also dread unloading things from my car. Hopefully, someone will invent something help us.

  3. I chose the inventor of the light bulb, British inventor Humphry Davy as my inventor to research. Thomas Edison gets a lot of credit for the light bulb but Humphry Davy actually invented the first light bulb about 80 years before Edison obtained a patent. I chose this inventor because I don't know what I would do if I couldn't flip on a switch and see at night.

If I could invent something it would be an automatic laundry machine. I hate doing laundry, it would be much nicer if something did it all for me.

    1. Meg,

It is terrible that Humphry Davy does not get the credit he deserves for inventing the light bulb. That is why these types of lessons (collaborative projects) are so important. You never know what you might learn from someone else. We recently had a power outage before I had to be at work, around 5:00 am. It was horrible doing everything in the dark and having no electricity! I am very thankful for the light bulb and Humphry Davy!

  4. I chose the inventor Alexander Graham Bell. He invented the telephone. We all know the telephone is a vital part of our everyday lives. Just imagine back in the day when you wanted to speak to someone that you had to pull out a paper and pen, write a letter, and just wait for it to be delivered. Want a response? You'll be waiting nearly another week until you finally receive the letter.

An invention I would create would be solar powered cell phones. They would charge under any light source and not require a charger.
